Girls Say Hello to Gerhard Richter - Eimi Fukada

This is my gut response to Gerhard Richter’s ‘48 Portraits’ series (1971-78). Richter, of course, makes beautiful paintings. But there is something very disturbing with this series – all are “important” white men, painted larger than life, in monotone, in suits, looking emotionlessly serious. The paintings are advised to be hung up high, so that visitors have to literally look up to them. So I did this little rebellious gesture in response to the Maestro – I paint Asian porn stars with their expressive orgasm faces in pastel colors.
