Dagmar Baumann
Dagmar Baumann works with paint on paper and canvas as well as on walls. Her visual language consists of abstract forms in explicit brushstrokes and swipes, crossing and overlapping each other. Tangible space is an important notion of the work. One of these spaces is a desk pad serving as a mental space for the painter to develop her artworks.
Baumann tends to extend the gesture from the canvas into the physical space of the exhibition. One could say the artist invites us to move through different spaces, the actual physical space as well as the imaginative and the mental space, where ideas emanate. Those spaces are connected to different impressions, observations and feelings that are all equally valuable. Just the way you might think about the exhibition space as the artist’s studio a paper notebook can be regarded as a space which is just as vital as the real, physical space. The scribbles and drawings are in other languages and presumably in a similar sense the various media applied by Dagmar Baumann can be understood as different spaces, opening up to other rooms – just like we switch from one language to another, or from room to room. alles, altijd, overal
Met mijn werk zoek ik naar een verbinding van alles met het specifieke, van altijd met het ogenblik en van het algemene met het eigene. Ik maak een omtrekkende beweging, waarin ‘alles’ een plaats kan krijgen.
Randvoorwaarden - er gebeurd veel tegelijkertijd in het atelier. Meestal werk in aan meerdere doeken. Ik transporteer de visuele vondsten van het ene doek naar het andere. Door het over elkaar heen leggen van bewegingen, ontstaan onverwachte effecten.
Schilderen buiten het doek. Deze ingreep is onderdeel van een tentoonstelling in 2020 met Heyer Thurnheer en Kathrin Wolkowicz in ons gezamenlijke atelier 004 in het ateliercomplex Borgerstraat 24.

Bio
1985 ben ik aan de FH voor Design, Aachen met een monumentaal environment afgestudeerd. Na een periode in Berlijn als ‘freie Künstlerin’ , bezig met performance en schilderkunst, ben ik naar Nederland verhuist om aan de Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht deel te nemen. Ik kwam voor multimedia, maar ben met de Nederlandse invloeden schilder geworden. Sinds 1989 woon en werk ik in Rotterdam.
Met wisselende frequentie stel ik in kunstruimtes, galeries en musea tentoon. Ik verdeel mijn tijd en werk tussen Rotterdam en Maastricht, waar ik een tweede atelier heb. Naast mijn kunstpraktijk geef ik les aan de Willem de Kooning Academie in Rotterdam op de afdelingen mode en ruimtelijk ontwerpen.
